Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
