Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
