Sheff Wed Confronts a 'Significant Problem', Says New Football Authority

'Our role is integral to football's future' - independent football regulator David Kogan

Sheffield Wednesday's current difficulties are seen as a "significant problem" and the football regulator is aiming to acquire authority to investigate clubs in comparable cases, the recently named head the official has stated.

Through a comprehensive talk, the chairman, who was named to the position this week, expressed "sympathy" towards the club's followers.

The chairman convened with four supporters' associations associated with the South Yorkshire club recently.

The Championship side have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in 2025, with the club failing to pay players on time on multiple instances, including in September.

"Clearly Sheffield Wednesday has been a significant problem for EFL and a major challenge for the sport," the chairman stated.

"Wednesday stands as one of the great brands for football in England and recently we have met supporters' organizations.

"We're now looking to get powers... which will enable us to take Sheffield Wednesday - and other clubs submitted for our review if they require examination and addressed."

Monetary Issues and Leadership Concerns

The club's controversial proprietor Dejphon Chansiri stated during the off-season he would be open to selling the club at their home ground, but he has not been able to secure a deal with potential new owners.

Failure to pay player wages on time in spring months caused limitations by the football authorities in June, stopping Wednesday from completing any recruitment activities for the subsequent signing windows, although those limitations were removed in August.

Regulator's Perspective

The regulator explained: "Our role exists to serve the supporters of Wednesday, other clubs in similar situations where supporters are loyal to a community organization that has existed throughout their lifetimes in multiple situations.

"I have absolute sympathy for the team's plight, as I do for every team that since 1992 have gone to the wall, or approached financial ruin, for causes separate from the followers."

When asked if the oversight body could require an chairman to relinquish a club if they are considered unfit, the chairman responded: "Should the inquiry concern 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the reply is once we collect the information and know what's going on, we will."

But Kogan stressed that forcing owners to sell clubs would be considered the final option and the regulator would prefer to cooperate with proprietors.

"Our least desirable course of action is begin intervening in an individual club, an individual owner, without having the opportunity to collaborate with that chairman to fix the problems affecting the organization and the chairman's encountering," the chairman stated.

"But the truth is, when you review the record of the sport, over the last 20 or 30 years there have been some owners, few in number, but some who have been irresponsible in the approach they have taken toward their clubs and ultimately refuse to accept accountability for the long-term prospects."

Sheffield Wednesday supporters have been voicing opposition to the team's chairman in recent months

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

The chairman convened with delegates from multiple organizations to lay out the remit of the authority recently and insisted it was a "proactive meeting" with a "substantial involvement" from the grassroots to elite level.

"The role holds considerable importance, because if we get it wrong, if the sport makes errors, the extraordinary progress that's been made necessary will vanish swiftly," the chairman stated.

"Such an outcome is universally undesirable in the realm of domestic football is a huge success story - we need to continue the progress.

"Substantial financial resources coming into football and has come into football for the recent generations, because there are no assurances it will keep flowing into the sport, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to take a really clear view on risk and of course, of the next two or three years."

Top Flight Apprehensions

The Premier League opposed the establishment of an oversight body because of concerns about detrimental effects on the elite division's competitive balance, but the chairman responded: "I fully support the prosperity and expansion as an commercial operation of the top division.

"Being fully aware of the concern of undermining the top flight as an elite competition of the nation. But simultaneously, if you engage with division representatives after the recent gathering, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, actually, they have been advising us privately they have a considerable comfort."

Ideological Links

The chairman continues to confront a "full inquiry" by the public appointments commissioner after he acknowledged providing funds to the opposition group in recent years.

The chairman donated money to Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport the minister's leadership bid, along with that of the government leader.

"I have fully disclosed my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that party membership ceased the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," the regulator explained.

"I currently have no participation in any form of political activity."
