Astronaut Discloses Depression After Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

About the Mission

The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included experts in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
